You've talked to their teachers. You've sat through conferences. You've tried the school programs, the computer apps, the late-night homework sessions. But your child is still struggling to make sense of what they read.
Maybe they can read the words–but they don't understand the meaning. Maybe they rush through passages or freeze when asked to explain. Maybe they can't put their thoughts into words, no matter how hard they try.
And now, they're frustrated. You're frustrated. And you're starting to realize: this isn't about effort–it's about needing a different kind of support.
You want your child to succeed, not just in school but in life. You want them to feel confident when they read, clear when they write, and capable when they speak.
You just need someone who understands what's going on beneath the surface–and how to reach them.
Maybe you've tried school-led interventions. Or a reading program that promised big gains–but just gave them more screen time.
Maybe you were told they'd grow out of it. Or that "they just need to read more."
But none of those strategies offered what your child really needed:
Personalized support.
A real human who sees them.
A method that goes deeper than decoding–and actually builds understanding.
You're not alone. Most parents come to me after those old methods didn't work. That's where Reading Through Times steps in.
Hi, I'm Courtney Lyles–and I've spent over a decade helping students become stronger readers, clearer writers, and more confident thinkers.
It started when I was a child, spending summers helping my grandfather–also a teacher–create lesson plans for his history and science classes. That early spark turned into a lifelong calling.
After earning my B.A. in History from Spelman College, I worked as a reading interventionist at an elementary school. There, I learned that fluency and phonics matter–but comprehension is the bridge to true understanding. I later taught high school social studies, where I saw firsthand how many students struggled not just with history, but with making meaning from the words in front of them.
To deepen my impact, I went on to earn a Master's in Curriculum and Instruction, where I focused on brain-based teaching strategies– methods proven to help students process, store, and apply what they learn.
I've also worked in education consulting and curriculum support roles, helping teachers across the country implement strategies that connect reading, writing, and thinking. Through it all, I kept tutoring students one-on-one–and that's where the Read Between the Lines method was born.
Today, I use the method to help students in grades 4-12 go beyond surface-level reading. They explore history, build real skills, and gain the confidence to express themselves clearly–on paper, in class, and in life.
Because reading should be more than a task. It should be a tool for understanding the world–and their place in it.
"Courtney is an amazing tutor! She's been working with my daughter for almost 6 months now. Her reading fluency and comprehension have grown, and her math skills are getting sharper too. Courtney gives great lessons, communicates well, and always keeps my daughter motivated."
"I can read faster now and understand what I read better. It helepd me get ready for MCAP too."
"I never thought my daughter would start reading on grade level. But now she says, 'I can sound out those words and read them, Mom!' She has so much more confidence. I had to do what I could to book more lessons with Courtney."
