I didn't plan to become a tutor. I grew into it— through summers with my grandfather, a beloved teacher for over 50 years, who let me help him build presentations for his history and science classes. I didn't realize it then, but I was absorbing what it meant to teach with purpose.
That passion followed me through college, where I earned my B.A. in History from Spelman. I volunteered in Atlanta-area schools and saw firsthand how much students struggled—not because they didn't care, but because they didn't have the tools. That realization launched a decade-long journey in literary education, where I've supported learners across elementary, middle, and high school.
From working as a reading interventionist at the elementary level...
To teaching high school students how to analyze primary sources in social studies...
To consulting with educators on how to implement reading strategies into their classrooms...
I kept seeing the same thing:
Students could read the words. But they didn't always understand what those words meant.
So I went deeper.
I earned a Master's in Curriculum and Instruction, focusing on brain-based strategies that help students not just memorize—but retain, connect, and apply what they learn. And then I started tutoring students one-on-one in the evenings...where the breakthroughs started happening.
Today, through Reading Through Times and the Read Between the Lines method, I help students in grades 4-12:
Strengthen reading comprehension and writing clarity
Read deeply and think critically using real-world history stories
Build fluency, expand vocabulary, and grow in confidence
Feel seen and challenged through identity-affirming content
Whether your child needs intervention or enrichment, every session is built to meet them right where they are—with structure, care, and strategy.
They don't just learn to read between the lines on paper.
They learn how to think deeper in life.
In just two, 25-minute sessions a week, I've seen students go from avoiding reading to leading class discussions—and from barely decoding words to confidently analyzing what they read.
I'm building a growing collecting of case studies that show exactly what progress looks like through the Read Between the Lines method.
